Phosphorus Content in Deposits of Zofiówka Monocline (Sw Part of the Upper Silesian Coal Basin)

Abstract: This article characterizes changes in the phosphorus content in 29 coal seams of the Pniówek and Zofiówka deposits within the Zofiówka Monocline. This was accomplished on the basis of a digital database containing 2,730 samples, where phosphorus content was determined in 1,674 samples. Basic statistical analysis was done to determine the number of samples for each coal seam (in which phosphorus content was determined), as well as min., max., and mean content of this element in the analyzed coal seams. The content of phosphorus was observed in the horizontal (in two directions: E-W and N-S) and vertical (with depth) direction. Contour maps of phosphorus content in all analyzed coal seams were also prepared. The results showed that the phosphorus content in the analyzed coal seams of the Zofiówka Monocline varies widely from 0.001 to 0.550% Pa (mean 0.064%). Therefore,the local coal contains a relatively high content of phosphorus unfavorable for the production of coke. The lowest content of this parameter is shown by coal seams No. 417/1, 418/1-2, 502/1, and 505/1; the highest coal content is found in seams No. 362/1 and 406/1. A general trend of changes in phosphorus content did not appear. Each of the coal seams exhibited differing characteristic changes. There was also no relation to the stratigraphy
