Abstract: This article tracks the emergence of the concept of competitiveness. A historical review of the achievements of foreign and Bulgarian authors is presented, as well as a grounded critical assessment of the different aspects of the category under consideration. An aggregate assessment of the achievements at the present stage is provided. Few directions for new developments and challenges of competitiveness research are outlined.
