Abstract:
Investment is a prerequisite for innovation and technological progress. Investment activity in Austria is currently well below the average of the eurozone countries. In view of a decline in the relative competitive position as a result of restrained investment activity, the question of economic policy measures to improve innovation and investment activity arises. The economic literature identifies a number of factors that can have a positive influence on investment and innovation. These include, in particular, access to cheap capital, improvements in the education system to promote human capital, the reduction of bureaucratic obstacles and a reduction of taxation and public debt.
