Abstract:
The realignment of US customs policy under President Trump is having a significant impact on German exports: advance effects in spring 2025 turned into noticeable declines from April onwards. Product groups subject to special or basic customs duties, such as vehicles and machinery, are particularly affected. Exporters must expect price pressure and declining margins. At the same time, German imports are rising in areas with favourable customs tariffs, such as Chinese clothing and toys, which poses new competitive risks. The German economy faces the challenge of increasing efficiency and opening up new markets.
