Abstract: Das Europäische Währungssystem (EWS) besteht seit nunmehr 10 Jahren. Die österreichische Währungspolitik weist traditionell enge Bindungen mit den Intentionen des EWS auf. Entsprechend ihrer Zielsetzung der Hartwährungspolitik hat der Schilling in diesem Jahrzehnt nominell- und real-effektiv an Wert gewonnen. Nur gegenüber dem Japanischen Yen und dem Schweizer Franken waren Kursverluste zu verzeichnen. Der Schilling erweist sich gemessen an einem fiktiven ECU-Leitkurs als "stärkste EWS-Währung".
