Abstract: Die räumliche Entwicklung Österreichs zeigt ein ausgeprägtes West-Ost-Gefälle. In den Ostgrenzgebieten ist der Rückstand in der wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Entwicklung besonders ausgeprägt. Das bewirkt eine Bevölkerungsabwanderung, die in Teilen der Grenzregion auf längere Sicht die wirtschaftliche und gesellschaftliche Funktionsfähigkeit gefährdet.
