Abstract: Das Konjunkturbild war vor Ausbruch der Golfkrise nahezu makellos. Der Aufschwung setzte sich in der Industrie unvermindert fort und erfaßte seit dem Frühjahr auch die Bauwirtschaft in vollem Umfang. Trotz der hohen Nachfrage blieben der Preisauftrieb gedämpft und die Leistungsbilanz aktiv. Die Beschäftigung wurde so stark ausgeweitet, daß sie im August erstmals die 3-Millionen-Marke überschritt. Dennoch stieg die Arbeitslosigkeit von Monat zu Monat rascher, denn der Ausländerzustrom nahm ungeahnte Dimensionen an.
