Abstract: Die Sozialisierung der Landwirtschaft in Osteuropa ist gescheitert. Eine Reform nach marktwirtschaftlichen Grundsätzen könnte die Agrarproduktion rasch steigern; auch Exportüberschüsse sind möglich. Der österreichischen Landwirtschaft und Ernährungswirtschaft bringt die Ostöffnung zusätzlichen Wettbewerb. Für die Lebensmittelindustrie bieten die osteuropäischen Märkte längerfristig interessante Chancen.
