Abstract: Die westlichen Industriestaaten weiteten ihre Exporte nach Ost-Mitteleuropa zwischen 1988 und 1992 um 64% aus. Ihre Importe stiegen trotz wichtiger Liberalisierungsmaßnahmen (Freihandelsverträge) viel schwächer, der Exportüberschuß des Westens erreichte 1992 4,5 Mrd. $. Österreich hat seinen Markt gegenüber Osteuropa stark geöffnet und zog viel mehr Vorteile als andere westliche Länder aus dem neuen Ost-West-Handel.
