Abstract: Die Sozialausgaben betrugen in Österreich 1997 insgesamt 725 Mrd. S, 28,8% des Bruttoinlandsproduktes. Die Sozialquote lag um 0,8 Prozentpunkte unter der Quote des Vorjahres und war damit wie 1997 rückläufig. Dem Volumen nach entsprechen die österreichischen Sozialausgaben dem EU-Durchschnitt (28,7% des BIP), während sich ihre Struktur erheblich von jener in den anderen EU-Ländern unterscheidet.
