Abstract: Der Verbraucherpreisindex misst die Entwicklung des Lebensstandards der privaten Haushalte, wird aber mitunter auch gemeinsam mit anderen Kennzahlen für die Beurteilung der Konjunkturlage verwendet. Seine Aussagekraft ist hier mit Vorsicht zu interpretieren: Die kurzfristige Preisentwicklung wird nämlich häufig von Faktoren bestimmt, die mit dem Konjunkturverlauf wenig oder gar nicht zusammenhängen. Diese Einschränkung betrifft sowohl den zeitlichen als auch den internationalen Vergleich von Inflationsraten.
