The force that rules the world: Commentary on Fenton‐O'Creevy and Tuckett (2021)
Heiko A. von der Gracht
Futures & Foresight Science, 2022, vol. 4, issue 3-4
Abstract:
In their submission to Futures and Foresight Science (2021), Fenton‐O'Creevy and Tuckett explore an extensive theme in human cultural and scientific history: the conviction narrative. In their article, they discuss the fundamental importance of narratives for foresight practice. This commentary acknowledges that approach and expands on it with some additional generalized considerations. But not only foresight is shaped by persuasive narratives—What about science, politics, management, and society? Does not every kind of long‐term activity, and even more so one of the proactive measures, presupposes a conviction on the part of the active stakeholder that is based on an exceedingly convincing story? The conviction narrative is the force that rules the world.
