Permafrost investigation in the Schilthorn massif, Bernese Alps, Switzerland

Abstract: Results of a study to investigate the permafrost distribution in a small mountain massif in the Bernese Alps (Switzerland) are presented. It is argued that the existing models for the regional simulation of permafrost distribution need considerable refinement in areas with only shallow debris covers (which amount to a considerable part of the alpine landscape). Moreover, the importance of snow cover and ground thermal characteristics for regional permafrost modelling is stressed. Besides the established field methods, ground temperature monitoring by means of small dataloggers have proved very useful. A distinct dependence of BTS on snow depth evolution during the preceding months is shown. Based on extensive field work, a map showing the permafrost distribution of the Schilthorn massif is presented. Copyright © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. Les résultats d'une étude de la répartition due pergélisol dans un petit massif de montagne des Alpes bernoises (Suisse) sont présentés. Il est avancé que les modèles de simulation de pergélisol existants devraient être améliorés dans les régions couvertes d'une couche de débris plutôt mince (ce qui est le cas pour la plupart du terrain alpin). En outre, la couverture neigeuse et les caractéristiques termiques du sol sont les facteurs dominants à considérer pour la simulation régionale de la distribution du pergélisol alpin. En plus des méthodes établies, le monitoring des températures du sol avec des petits dataloggers s'est avéré très utile. On a pu constater que la BTS est nettement dépendante de l'épaisseur de neige pendant les mois précédents.
