The contribution of W. R. B. battle to mechanical weathering studies

W. Brian Whalley and J. P. McGreevy

Permafrost and Periglacial Processes, 1991, vol. 2, issue 4, 341-346

Abstract: W. R. B. Battle had started to make important contributions to the study of the mechanical weathering of rock in relation to the 'bergschrund hypothesis' of corrie erosion when he died. As well as temperature observations in bergschrunds, he made measurements on the reduction in strength (as Young's Modulus) for beams of rock in the laboratory. A summary of his work is given, together with the graph which was used to suggest a critical rate of cooling of 0.1 ºC/min for porous rocks.
