10 year surficial velocities on a rock glacier (Laurichard, French Alps)

Abstract: A survey of painted lines on the top and frontal zone of a talus rock glacier allows one to present a longitudinal profile of the surficial velocity distribution. Measurements were taken over a 8–12 year period at regular intervals and the results now provide information on the variability of displacements. In the upper zone a recent slowing of movement coincides with negative mass balance of local glaciers. Discussion focuses on the variations in velocity of the rock glaciers over the short time‐scale. On a mis en place un dispositif basé des lignes de blocs peints qui permet de suivre, par géodésie, les vitesses d'un glacier rocheux naissant de talus d'éboulis. Les relevés, qui ont été effectués à intervalles réguliers pendant une période de 8–12 ans, apportent des informations sur la variabilité des vitesses. Dans la partie radicale, un ralentissement est observé depuis quelques années, lequel coincide dans le temps avec une série de bilans de masse négatifs mesures sur des glaciers proches. On discute la question des variations de vitesse se produisant sur les glaciers rocheux à une échelle de temps courte.
