Radiocarbon Dating and Oxygen Isotope Variations in Late Pleistocene Syngenetic Ice‐Wedges, Northern Siberia

Abstract: The occurrence of well‐preserved redeposited organic material is the main limitation for radiocarbon dating of syngenetic permafrost sediments. Only radiocarbon dating of (1) autochthonous organic remains or (2) a series of non‐inverted radiocarbon dates, in the case of allochthonous organic material in permafrost thicknesses, is valid. An interpretation of oxygen isotope values from syngenetic ice‐wedges is considered in the context of several syngenetic permafrost sequences for northern Eurasia. Radiocarbon dating of organic matter from the host sediments which accumulated synchronously to the ice‐wedges provides an age attachment for the oxygen isotope determinations. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. L'existence de matériaux organiques redéposés et bien préservés constitue l'obstacle principal pour obtenir par radiocarbone l'age des sédiments mis en place syngénétiquement avec la formation du pergélisol. Seules les datations 14C (1) de restes organiques autochtones ou (2) dans le cas de matériaux organiques allochtones, de restes compris dans une série continue et cohérente de datations peuvent être considérées comme valables. Une interprétation des isotopes de l'oxygène se trouvant dans les coins de glace syngénétiques est considérée dans le contexte de plusieurs séquences du pergélisol de l'Eurasie septentrionale. La datation par radiocarbone de la matière organique des sédiments qui se sont accumulés en même temps que se formaient des coins de glace, fournissent un âge pour les déterminations des isotopes de l'oxygène dans la glace de fente de gel. © 1997 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
