Late cenozoic permafrost history of the Russian Arctic

Abstract: The history of permafrost over the last 1·5 million years has been traced back for both the sea shelf and the adjacent land of the Russian Arctic. Maps have been constructed for four extreme climatic stages: (a) for the cool stage of the Middle Pleistocene, (b) for the warm stage of the Late Pleistocene beginning, (c) for the cool stage of the Late Pleistocene end, and (d) for the Holocene climatic optimum. The distribution pattern, temperature, and thickness of various types of permafrost (subaerial, subglacial and submarine) have been mapped. The exercise allows one to identify the principal regularities of permafrost evolution and to predict its further development. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. L'histoire du pergélisol au cours des derniers 1,5 million d'années est présentée à la fois pour la plate‐forme marine et les terres arctiques russes voisines. Des cartes ont été préparées pour quatre stades climatiques extrêmes, à savoir: a) pour la période froide du Pléistocène moyen, b) pour le stade chaud du début de la fin du Pléistocène, c) pour le stade froid de la fin du Pléistocène et c) pour l'optimum climatique de l'Holocène. La distribution, la température et l'épaisseur de divers types de pergélisol (subaérien, subglaciaire et sous‐marin) ont été cartographiés. Ce travail permet d'identifier les règles principales de l'évolution du pergélisol et de prédire son évolution future. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
