Explaining the economic, social, and political structure of rural poverty using a mixed exploratory approach: A case study of Shamshir village, Kermanshah province, Iran

Abstract: The present study aimed at description of the economic, social, and political structure of the poverty in Shamshir village using an exploratory mixed methods' approach. To do so, qualitative methodologies were conducted among 30 residents of Shamshir village using purposive theoretical sampling. Also, an additional quantitative investigation was carried out among 327 villagers based on random sampling method. The qualitative phase was performed applying observation, unstructured interview, note‐taking, and focus groups while quantitative data were collected by the questionnaire. The findings of the research indicated the importance of economic, social, and political structures in respondents' poverty status of the Shamshir Village; where, the social structure played a greater role. In more detail, the governmental support, private companies, cooperatives, and governmental economic policies were assumed as the factors which could reduce the poverty in Shamshir village. 本研究旨在通过一项探究式混合方法，分析Shamshir村贫困的经济、社会、政治结构。使用的研究方法具有应用性和探究性。我们对通过立意理论抽样（purposive theoretical sampling）选取的30名Shamshir村民使用定性方法。我们对通过随机抽样选取的327名村民展开额外的定性调查。定性过程主要由观察、非结构化访谈、做笔记、焦点小组组成，并且我们通过问卷工具收集定量数据。本研究得出的发现显示了Shamshir村民贫困的经济、社会、政治结构的重要性，但社会结构发挥的作用最大。最后，我们发现，政府支持、私人公司、合作社、以及政府和其他经济政策代表了减少Shamshir村贫困的不同方法。 El presente estudio tiene como objetivo explicar la estructura económica, social y política de la pobreza en la aldea de Shamshir mediante un enfoque exploratorio de métodos mixtos. El método de investigación en cuestión es tanto aplicado como exploratorio. Llevamos a cabo metodologías cualitativas con 30 aldeanos de Shamshir, seleccionados mediante un muestreo teórico intencional. Realizamos una investigación cuantitativa adicional con 327 aldeanos seleccionados mediante muestreo aleatorio. La fase cualitativa consistió en observación, entrevista no estructurada, toma de notas y grupos focales, y recolectamos datos cuantitativos utilizando una herramienta de cuestionario. Los hallazgos de la investigación indican la importancia de las estructuras económicas, sociales y políticas de la pobreza pertenecientes a los aldeanos de Shamshir, pero la estructura social juega el papel más importante. En última instancia, encontramos que el apoyo gubernamental, las empresas privadas y las cooperativas, así como las políticas gubernamentales y de otro tipo, representan varios enfoques para reducir la pobreza en la aldea de Shamshir.
