Abstract: This paper examines the environmental dimension of sustainable development policy and practice in Scotland. Among the issues considered in the paper are matters related to the political context for environmental policy and the evolution of statutory responsibilities. Looking forward, the paper assesses the growing influence of the European Union on environmental issues and calls for the establishment of a more integrated approach to policy.
