Abstract: Chile has been a highly successful mining country for over two centuries. Huge sums of money are generated but only a small proportion of the revenue is being directed back into the region whose natural resources are being depleted. Mining companies may not be in control of the way central government spends these funds but they have a responsibility towards the communities they impact. The environmental problems associated with mining practices have attracted most attention but the impact on the communities is proving to be a far greater challenge. This paper focuses on the social consequences and the evolving response of the mining companies to these problems and the future sustainability of the region.
