Abstract: Solutions to current environmental and social problems cannot be achieved on the basis of the traditional concept of development. One solution may be the idea of 'sustainable development', which presents a series of solutions leading to the protection and safeguarding of three thrusts to development, i.e. that of society (culture), of nature and of the economy. It assumes major modifications to our way of thinking - and to the means of civilizational development - pursued hitherto. It points to the need for the spiritual development of humankind, and for an exchange of the goals of development from the material centred to the non-materialistic. With respect to these general assumptions and goals, sustainable development encounters many practical and psychological problems that curb (or even prevent) the effective incorporation of the concept in practice (the greatest single barrier is global unilateralism).
