Abstract:
The urban sustainable assessment tools (USATs) are often used to measure the effectiveness of communities in achieving sustainable development goals. However, there is still a lack of in‐depth critical evaluation of these tools. This paper analyzes the current USATs, having as a result of this study an outline of the main shortcomings of these methodologies. The presentation of a solution to these limitations is the aim of the paper, and it is satisfied with the introduction of a new comprehensive methodology, named ‘UISA fEN’ (Urban Integrated Sustainable Assessment methodology for Existing Neighborhoods), which is an indexing model for evaluating sustainability in existing neighborhoods. This paper outlines a general overview of UISA fEN methodology with the objective of providing a series of reflections on how to enhance the sustainability of existing neighborhoods, by using the proper sustainable key indicators.
