Systems engineering drivers in defense and in commercial practice

Abstract:
In the past two decades, commercial systems have grown to the point where they exceed defense‐related systems in several of the areas which typically have driven the need for systems engineering. Developing SE methodologies for profit‐oriented businesses forces us to look in great detail at government‐enforced practices and understand the true drivers behind the processes. The methods, tools, and procedures adopted must give sufficient benefit in relation to their cost: otherwise, they will eat into the company's bottom line without concomitant gain. The need for systems engineering in both environments is dependent on the size of the system under consideration, its complexity, its technological risk, and the needs of the customer. This article will examine the different drivers for systems engineering in both the defense/aerospace environments and in the commercial environment. © 1998 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
