VERDICT: A distributed virtual environment for system engineering

Abstract:
This paper introduces a notional framework for the development of a distributed virtual interface, called VERDICT, for a systems engineering development environment. VERDICT stands for Virtual Environment for Remote Design Integration and Configuration Testing. The framework offers suggestions on how cognitive aspects of various system design capture views can be presented and shared among engineers of complex systems, using distributed virtual environment technology. The approach utilizes a taxonomy of the types of knowledge representations, or cognitive media, best suited to the capture of design information. These cognitive media are in turn mapped to physical multimedia, thereby providing the actual design representation. © 2000 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.* Syst Eng 3:156–162, 2000
