THE REPUBLICAN TRUMP VOTER

Abstract: With its emphasis on anti‐immigration rhetoric and actions, protectionism, as well as populism, Donald Trump has transformed the Republican Party into a party that closely resembles populist radical right‐wing parties in Europe. In this article, we first illustrate how the Republican Party has transformed into a radical right‐wing party. Second, we examine the degree to which the Trump voter has the same or similar characteristics as the prototypical radical right‐wing voter. To do so, we compare some key features of voters for the Alternative for Germany (AfD) and Trump voters. Through original survey research, we find that the two voter types are alike. Both AfD and Trump voters espouse anti‐immigrant sentiment, reject globalization, and position themselves on the right on a left‐right ideological scale. This implies that, both from a supply and demand side perspective, the Trump Republican Party has become a prototypical radical right‐wing party. Con su énfasis en la retórica y las acciones contra la inmigración, el proteccionismo y el populismo, Donald Trump ha transformado al Partido Republicano en un partido que se parece mucho a los partidos populistas radicales de derecha en Europa. En este artículo, primero ilustramos cómo el Partido Republicano se ha transformado en un partido radical de derecha. En segundo lugar, examinamos el grado en que el votante de Trump tiene las mismas o similares características que el votante prototípico de la derecha radical. Para ello, comparamos algunas características clave de los votantes de Alternativa para Alemania (AfD) y los votantes de Trump. A través de una investigación de encuesta original, encontramos que los dos tipos de votantes son similares. Tanto los votantes de AfD como los de Trump defienden el sentimiento antiinmigrante, rechazan la globalización y se posicionan a la derecha en una escala ideológica de izquierda a derecha.
