Extended commentary—Keeping the republic: A vision for America

Abstract: The United States is enduring an identity crisis characterized by a polarized political climate precipitating an American culture war. In this battle the Republican Party has been overtaken by “Anti‐wokeism” allied with antidemocratic “states' rights” beliefs claiming an exclusive, antipluralist definition of republic. The extremist right in America insists that America is not a democracy, but a “republic” built to respect the status of a minority characterized as white, nationalist and Christian. “Anti‐wokeism” is an extension of Trumpism and MAGA (Make America Great Again), gathering together antidemocratic forces, fueled by resentment and theories of racial displacement known as the Great Replacement Theory. These forces are overwhelming the modern Republican Party, inspiring homophobia, misogyny, racism, book bans, and violence. This essay addresses the following four elements of this crisis with an eye to a renewed vision of America: (1) the difference between an 18th Century and 21st Century definition of a republic; (2) the antidemocratic states' rights movement; (3) the nature of strongman populism in American politics; and (4) a vision of diversity as the core principle of the American Republic. 美国正在经历一场身份危机，其特点是极化的政治气候，后者催生了一场美国文化战争。在这场斗争中，共和党已受到“反觉醒主义”和反民主的“州权利”信仰的影响，将共和国宣称为具有排他性和反多元主义。美国极右翼坚持认为，美国不是一个民主国家，而是一个为了尊重白人、民族主义者和基督徒这一少数群体地位而建立的“共和国”。“反觉醒主义”是特朗普主义和MAGA（让美国再次伟大）的延伸，在怨恨和被称为大取代理论的种族取代理论的推动下，聚集了反民主势力。这些势力正在征服现代共和党，引发了同性恋恐惧症、厌女症、种族主义、禁书和暴力。本文着眼于美国的新愿景，研究了这场危机的以下四个要素:1)18世纪的共和国定义和21世纪的共和国定义之间的差异；2)反民主的州权利运动；3)美国政坛强人民粹主义的本质；4)作为美利坚共和国核心原则的多元化愿景。 Los Estados Unidos está atravesando una crisis de identidad, caracterizada por un clima político polarizado que precipita una guerra cultural estadounidense. La extrema derecha en Estados Unidos insiste en que Estados Unidos no es una democracia, sino una “república” construida para respetar el estatus de una minoría caracterizada como blanca, nacionalista y cristiana. El “antidespertar” es una extensión del trumpismo y MAGA (Make America Great Again), que reúne fuerzas antidemocráticas, alimentadas por el resentimiento y las teorías de desplazamiento racial conocidas como la Teoría del Gran Reemplazo. Estas fuerzas están abrumando al Partido Republicano moderno, inspirando homofobia, misoginia, racismo, prohibición de libros y violencia. Este ensayo aborda los siguientes cuatro elementos de esta crisis con miras a una visión renovada de Estados Unidos: 1) la diferencia entre una definición de república del siglo XVIII y una del siglo XXI; 2) el movimiento por los derechos de los estados antidemocráticos; 3) la naturaleza del populismo de hombre fuerte en la política estadounidense; y 4) una visión de la diversidad como principio central de la República Americana.
