Inequality and public opinion on military spending in the United States

Abstract: In this article, I argue that increasing inequality should have an impact on public opinion which balances the impact of military spending in the United States. Using the so‐called “guns versus butter trade‐off” argument, I show that, as inequality increases between those at a lower income level and those at the upper end of income, the public may view social spending as too small and military spending as too large. In response, the public should act less favorably to expenditure on the military. An empirical test of the effect of inequality on public support (since the 1980s) of military spending, in which I employ public opinion data, confirms my expectations: widening inequality engenders a negative impact on public support for defense expenditures. 现有文献已探讨了多个影响军事开支舆论的因素，包括性别、政治意识形态和征兵等。广泛研究的因果关系涉及军事支出对社会不平等的影响；这种影响似乎具有积极和消极这两面。我们在本文中论证，不平等的加剧应该对舆论产生影响，从而平衡美国军事支出的影响。通过使用所谓的“大炮与黄油的权衡”论点，我们认为，随着低收入水平和高收入水平之间的不平等加剧，公众可能会认为社会支出太少，而军事支出太多。作为回应，公众应该对军事支出采取不那么喜好的态度。鉴于这种不平等可能对“公众对军事支出的支持”产生影响，我们假设，在不平等程度较大的美国州中，公众对军事支出的支持应该低于其他州。我们利用民意数据对“不平等对1980年代以来公众支持军事支出一事的影响”进行了实证检验，结果证实了我们的理论:不平等的扩大会对公众对国防支出的支持产生负面影响。 En este artículo sostengo que la creciente desigualdad debería tener un impacto en la opinión pública que equilibra el impacto del gasto militar en los Estados Unidos (EE. UU.). Usando las llamadas ‘armas’ “compensación versus mantequilla”, creo que, a medida que aumenta la desigualdad entre quienes tienen un nivel más bajo, nivel de ingresos y aquellos en el extremo superior de los ingresos, el público puede considerar el gasto social como demasiado pequeño y el gasto militar demasiado grande. En respuesta, el público debería actuar de manera menos favorable a gastos en el ejército.
