An Analysis of the 2024 Sri Lankan Presidential Elections

Abstract: Elections are a cornerstone of any functioning democracy, providing a vital platform for citizens to express their political will and engage in the governance of their nation. Sri Lanka, renowned for its competitive electoral landscape and vibrant party mobilization, conducted peaceful elections on September 21, 2024. The results marked a significant victory for the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) and its coalition, the National People's Power (NPP), which triumphed over prominent candidates Sajith Premadasa and Ranil Wickremesinghe. Both candidates had pledged commitments to decentralizing power and implementing economic reforms recommended by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), reflecting a broader desire for change among the electorate. Los resultados marcaron una victoria significativa para el Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) y su coalición, el Poder Popular Nacional (NPP), que se impuso a los destacados candidatos Sajith Premadasa y Ranil Wickremesinghe.
