The Third Party Administrator for Self-Insured Health Care Plans

Roger M. Siddall and Clyde J. Cooley

Journal of Insurance Issues, 1985, vol. 8, issue 1, 42-51

Abstract: Health care is rapidly becoming the nation's largest industry, accounting for over $322.4 billion in 1982, or 10.5 percent of the G.N.P. In 1950, health care expenditures were about 4 percent of the G.N.P. Health care costs are estimated to be inflating at the rate of 13 percent per year. At this rate of inflation, total health care costs will rise to approximately $441 billion by the end of 1985. … In an effort to reduce the impact of increasing health care costs, self-insured health benefit programs are advancing in the market and becoming a standard in the insurance sector. Along with these self -insured operations comes the need for administrators. "Third party Administrators" are a new category in the field of insurance administration and are becoming a significant factor.
