Abstract: The problem of poverty is as old as human history, so is the concern for poverty. Although this concern is age-old, it appears to have been heightened with the progress of civilization and greater economic prosperity. Poverty—its different meanings and manifestations—has been studied by historians, sociologists and economists. Its causes have been traced to a wide variety of sources; its alleviation has been sought in many different directions. Despite the concern for poverty for centuries, attempts at measuring poverty are relatively recent, linked largely to developments in economics and statistics.
