Abstract:
We use a panel data set of seven East Asian countries for the time period 2000–2010 to evaluate the importance of four determinants for manufacturing competitiveness by estimation the proxy export equation. The four main determinants examined are demander's national income, real effective exchange rate (REER), unit labor cost and provision of infrastructure. The results show the importance is changing with country's characteristics. Raising labor productivity and improving infrastructure are two universal requirements for long-term competitiveness in manufacturing.
