Australia and China: Souring Relations with Little Chance of a Reset on the Horizon

Abstract: This article examines the bilateral relationship between Australia and China, which has become problematic since 2015. The causes for the downturn in relations are examined and two key reasons are offered: Australia is caught in the middle of power contestation between the United States and China; and Australia’s fear of its economic overdependence on China. This article deduces what a reset would look like and how this may eventuate.
