Abstract:
This article examines the evolution of US strategy towards Southeast Asia from a cyclical perspective. Amid escalating competition between the United States and China, Southeast Asia has emerged as a focal area for US containment of China. With US President Donald Trump in his second term since January 2025, the United States has pursued a balanced expansion approach towards Southeast Asia. The authors argue that Southeast Asian nations should adopt flexible, neutral hedging strategies to strengthen their strategic autonomy and resilience in the face of shifting geopolitical challenges.
