Abstract:
The paper traces the evolution of the Indian startup ecosystem via three major approaches: Historical context, major government initiatives and policies, and the positioning of innovation in entrepreneurship growth. Based on archival analysis, secondary data review and case studies, I examine entrepreneurship from the pre-colonial era through the post-liberalization period. Five major phases of development are identified based on different struggles and opportunities for startups. Maintaining this macro perspective, the paper recommends working out more specific dynamics of sectoral innovation and evaluating relevant policies. Policy entrepreneurs and investors alike will find such insight valuable as this is a bridge between traditional entrepreneurship and new technology-based enterprises.
