Abstract: In this paper image-induced surface states at metal surfaces will be discussed, and the transition from image states to image resonances in those cases where they disperse into the bulk continuum. The behavior is particularly interesting in the case of Fe(110) where the spin-split image states disperse into the spin-split continua and show different surface resonance behavior. The surface state-surface resonance transition can be simply understood in terms of an embedding potential which describes their interaction with the crystal.
