Abstract:
Resonant photoemission at the Ce4Dedge has been used to investigate the effects of small doses of oxygen on the4flineshapes of CeAl,CeSn3,CeCu2Si2,CeBe13,CeSi2, andCeSb2. In general we find that the Fermi level4fpeak is rapidly quenched, while the "2 eV" peak intensity increases, consistent with the formation ofCe2O3and possibly ternary oxides. We conclude that surface4ffeatures are a major part of the clean spectrum, and that sample purity is paramount when attempting to obtain data suitable for comparison with theory. Using the example ofCeCu2Si2we show how previously published data, which has recently been used to show the supposed validity of the Kondo approach, were in fact obtained from oxidised samples.
