Abstract: The adsorption of propene on thin copper films was studied using transmission FTIR spectroscopy. At 165 K the propene molecule is found to be molecularly adsorbed as a π-complex on the surface, interacting with the surface via theC=Cdouble bond. The molecular skeleton is oriented largely parallel to the metal surface but with the methyl group tilted away from the surface. No evidence was found for the existence of either the di-σ or the propylidyne species suggesting that the adsorption behavior of propene on copper bears a strong resemblance to that exhibited by ethene.
