Abstract:
The adsorption of methanol on clean and oxygen-precoveredAg{111}has been investigated by high-resolution infrared spectroscopy. On the clean surface a highly inclined, associatively adsorbed methanol overlayer was detected. The presence of coadsorbed atomic oxygen results in the formation of a surface methoxy species, which is shown to have its C-O bond axis oriented normal to the surface by the application of the metal-surface selection rule.
