Abstract:
Recent advances in polarized, high-order multiple-scattering calculations of extended X-ray absorption find structure (EXAFS) in surface systems are reviewed. Our method is based on curved-wave multiple-scattering (MS) theory and a scattering matrix formalism, which provides an efficient, unified treatment of XAFS, encompassing both EXAFS and X-ray absorption near-edge structure (XANES). Combined with multipath fits inr-space, such calculations have the potential to extend the capability of surface EXAFS experiments, going well beyond the first near-neighbor. The theory is illustrated with theoretical simulations. Our approach also gives a MS interpretation of continuum σ* shape-resonances.
