Abstract:
ANbOfilm (~ 8 Å thick) deposited on a gold substrate is shown by XPS to be relatively inert to aH2/H2Otreatment. However, when the same treatment is made following the deposition of iron (layer ~ 12 Å thick), theNbOshows a much enhanced reactivity; it is converted to a higher oxide while theFeconverts toFe2O3. Heating this sample to 300°C under UHV conditions caused a more complete conversion ofNbOto aNbO2-like oxide, while simultaneously theFe2O3is reduced toFeO. Further heating at 500°C yielded a pureNb2O5film, while theFeOappears to reduce to the metallic form which then dissolves into the gold.
