Abstract: The mass and velocity distributions of an iron-cluster beam generated by laser vaporization are measured by time-of-flight spectrometers to get information on the cluster growth inside the source. Only fast iron monomers are observed until 0.3 ms after the vaporization. The vaporized iron atoms are then cooled down enough to aggregate into clusters. The size of clusters become larger, up to 700 iron atoms, as the stagnation time in the source increases from 0.3 to 0.6 ms. The saturation of the cluster growth is observed later than 0.6 ms, suggesting the decrease in the density of the aggregating source particles.
