Abstract: We report the generation of phosphorus-cluster cations containing up to 35 atoms by direct laser ablation of red phosphorus for the first time without supersonic expansion. Bare-cluster cations with an odd nymber of phosphorus atoms are preferentially produced. For even-number phosphorus atom clusters, the cluster cations with an odd number of hydrogens (present in trace amount in the source) are easily produced.
