Abstract: We found that the coalescence reactions of fullerenes occur more efficiently for chemical adduct compounds ofC60than pristineC60by the laser-desorption ionization technique. Under specific conditions, not only the even-numbered daughter fullerenes by successiveC60losses or captures appeared, but also odd-numbered carbon-cluster anions${\rm{C}}_N^-$(51≤N≤65)were detected in the chemical fusion processes. The result suggests a new way to open fullerene cages, and the possible mechanism involved is discussed.
