Abstract: A review of the interpretation of the angle-dependent Auger intensity pattern by both Auger electron diffraction (AED), which is concerned with identifying the nearby atomic structure, and angle-resolved Auger electron spectroscopy (ARAES), which is concerned with identifying the character of the emitted electron source function, is presented. The importance of the emission character of the Auger electron (in terms of its angular momentum,l, and its magnetic quantum number,m)in understanding the generation of the AED and ARAES patterns is described. Understanding of how the various direct and secondary mechanisms for the Auger electron generation can affect the populations of these states can also be used to help identify the multiplet structure within the Auger lineshape as well as elucidate the core hole generation process.
