Abstract: The de-excitation of metastable (23S1) He* atoms upon scattering from clean, NO- and CO-covered Cu(100) and Pd(111) surfaces has been investigated, and the He* survival probability was measured as a function of the NO and CO coverage. The corresponding adlayer structures were characterizedin situby ground state He atom scattering (HAS). The present results support an earlier interpretation of metastable de-excitation spectroscopy (MDS) data indicating a suppression of the resonance ionization (RI) de-excitation channel in the case of CO adsorption due to a screening of the metal surface by the adsorbate layer. In contrast, for NO on Pd(111) no increase of the He* survival probability was observed.
