Abstract:
Gd/W(110) represents an important system for understanding magnetic coupling phenomena and the magnetic structure of rare earths. In connection with our study of quantum-well states in this system, there is a remarkable behavior of photoemission spectra at lowest coverages (0–3 monolayers). After the disappearance of W surface-derived features, a set of intense, sharp features appears in the energy region of the Gd bulk band gap. Their origin is tested using resonant photoemission at the Gd 4d–4f excitation threshold.
