Abstract: Using angle-resolved photoemission, we observe quantum-well-state formation as pronounced peaks up to large thicknesses in epitaxial Ag and Au films on W(110). These systems serve as a test case for the assignment of sp and d orbital character to quantum-well states since overlap of sp with d states is strong for both systems but differs in detail. Starting out from peak assignments on the basis of the extended phase accumulation model, the angle dispersion of several features is discussed in detail and related to the orbital character.
