Surface Review and Letters (SRL), 2007, vol. 14, issue 03, 361-369

Abstract: In this paper, the applications and qualifications of biomedical materials are introduced. In regard to the hard tissue implants, the biocompatibility can be improved by preparing various bio-ceramic and bio-glass coatings. In view of this, the principles, characteristics, and applications of surface modification (plasma spraying, electrostatic spray deposition, micro-arc oxidation, pulsed laser deposition, sol–gel deposition, and magnetron sputtering) in biomedical materials are reviewed. In addition, the research direction of improving biocompatibility by surface modification is presented.
