Abstract:
Bee keeping in Nepal has started from ancient time but modern bee keeping was started only after 1990 with introduction Apis milifera from India. Institutional development for bee keeping was started during 1960s with department of agriculture providing few technical services, separate office for apiculture development was established in the year 1984 at Godawari, Lalitpur since then bee keeping has always been priority program in agriculture. Despite being priority program, its contribution in national economy is negligible. This article tries to figure out problems and issues of apiculture development in Nepal and possible strategies to overcome the problems. Information was gathered from FGD and desk review. FGD was carried out in the form of workshop with all stakeholders and desk review was done to supplement it. Problems of apiculture are majorly categorized into four groups namely, Forage related issues and problems, technical problems, market related problems and policy related problems. Possible strategies to address problems are recommended. Bee floral identification and mapping of bee pasture, advance breeding & genetic improvement, bee friendly forest policy and legislation to abandon illegal import of honey are the major issues needs to be solved for flourishing apiculture in Nepal.
