Abstract: Global development resulting in the outcome document “the future we want” containing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) is a joint agenda of all world society. At least, there are three sustainable development issues highly required to develop: economic, social, and environmental issue. State Islamic Higher Education institutions has a strategic role to succeed the global development. Its role may not be separated from the existence of society and state. If social communication is not well managed, it may hamper higher education, state and society in achieving their goals. Thus, this paper will deeply analyze the social communication between the academicians of IAIN and the society in local, national and global context. The analysis is conducted using a constructivism approach to comprehensively explain the role of higher education within sustainable development. The research result shows that it is important to develop higher education by involving the society, both as partner and subject to mutually collaborate in developing the higher education quality and the surrounding community independence.
